Two complementary disciplines

Operational maintenance keeps a service working. Security maintenance addresses its exposure to threats over time. An available but unpatched system can be vulnerable; a poorly prepared security update can interrupt service. Both disciplines need a shared inventory and change process.

Define the actual scope

Map each service to its components, owner and criticality. Specify who manages systems, applications, identities and backups. Responsibilities for an external SaaS dependency differ from those for a fully controlled platform.

  • Track versions, dependencies, access and end-of-support dates.
  • Define coverage, reporting channels and priorities.
  • Separate recurring operations from project changes.

Establish a maintenance cycle

Qualify alerts, prioritise vulnerabilities by actual exposure, test patches and schedule deployment. Significant changes require validation, a maintenance window and a rollback plan. Urgent patches may use an accelerated process while retaining traceability.

Measure the service, not just the machines

Low CPU usage does not prove that users can sign in. Combine technical metrics, critical user-journey checks, backup freshness and change tracking. Regular reviews turn recurring incidents into improvement work.

Things to check.

  • Inventory and owners identified
  • Documented patch cycle
  • Emergency and rollback procedures
  • Incident and access reviews
